Dindigul Venu Briyani

After 3 days in Coimbatore and eating in a swanky club, posh hotels and friend’s home it was time to get local! After a lot of discussion with a cab driver, auto drivers and friends it was decided on Dindigul Venu Briyani, located in the heart of the city.

I walked in around 7:15pm and found the modest hotel half full. They do NOT have a menu, the waiter recites it – if you care to ask. But most customers seem to know what to order! I ordered a half plate Mutton Briyani (seen in the pic above) and Mutton Varuval.

The Briyani was upturned on my plantain leaf from a small bowl and served with a choice of several curries – mutton, chicken etc and onion raitha. The Briyani was made with Jeeraga Samba rice which was very easy to digest but rich in ghee. With an unique taste, I couldn’t stop with just one – so went ahead and ordered a quarter. The varuval was soft and delicious and had a distinct masala and tasted great with the Briyani.

Happy with the food and service I tipped the waiter generously, who smiled broadly and told me to come again soon. Sure, the next time I get to Coimbatore.

After the heavy dinner, I felt like my purpose is done in Coimbatore! It’s time to head back home to Chennai and taste our very own Basmati Briyani!
